My name is Matt, and I am a 30 year old man, an adult, who is in love with pro wrestling. I know its silly, people say its for kids, or they say,” don’t you know its fake?”. They ask if I like other men getting all oiled up and grabbing each other while wearing underwear. Well none of that has ever really been a factor to me. I was a kid, 6 or 7 when my father ordered Wrestlemania 4 on PPV. That’s my earliest memory. From that moment on it spawned in to a full time obsession.
Every weekend, on the living room floor watching Wrestling Challenge and Superstars, getting lost in the action, the storylines, the characters, Oh my god the characters. I would spend countless hours begging my mother to take me to Palmer Video so I could rent whatever wrestling tapes I could find. As the years went by, I become obsessed with wrestling. I discovered WCW on TBS and was introduced to a whole other world of superstars, Ric Flair, Sting, the Steiner Brothers, and even guys from WWF like Ricky Steamboat and Rick Rude. I had all the action figures, the magazines, and as I got to my early teens I got a job, with that job came money, and with money came a whole other part of the obsession that can only be explained as insane. Now I could afford whatever I wanted, so I started going to wrestling conventions, and meeting all this guys I had never dreamed of meeting. My friends were wrestling fans, so we would take trips to WWF shows, Raw, Summerslam, we went to any show we could see. We took the Indies by storm and were loud and obnoxious and we thought we knew everything there was to know about wrestling. I discovered ECW with the help of my good friend Eddie. ICP introduced me to the King of the Death Match with there VHS Stranglemania. RF Video sent me a catalog of over 1500 wrestling video’s from Japan to SMW to ECW and back again.I even had 3 friends go to wrestling school. By the time I was 20 I had a collection of over 200 wrestling videos from all over the world, hadn’t missed a WWF Pay Per View in 3 years, and had pretty much seen it all. Something happened after Vince purchased WCW, and I just stopped watching wrestling, cold turkey. With the internet and the fact that I didn’t have to watch Raw or Smackdown any more, that I could just read about it, I got lazy. And just stopped caring. I didn’t watch wrestling for 8 years. Over those years I did enjoy the DVD collections the WWE were putting out, and that pushed me back in the direction of my 1st true love. Wrestling. I reconnected with Eddie on our love for wrestling, Eddie never lost his, and he enjoyed my renewed love. After Tony mentioned a wrestling podcast, I was all in. So here we are. This blog is either gonna be fun or its gonna eat a bag of shit. Hopefully you enjoy it and you keep supporting the Shining Wizards Podcast.
